April 4, 2003. It was the second anniversary of when Jen and Yaron met. To celebrate, they decided to have dinner at the restaurant where they went on their first date.
So, at 7:30pm they entered what is now and forever their restaurant - Lola on West 22nd street in New York City. Little did Jennifer know what she was walking into. They were seated at what is thought to be the same table where they sat on their first date. Everything was going to begin after Jen and Yaron had their appetizers. Unfortunately, Jennifer ordered the onion rings appetizer. At Lola, this is a HUGE plate of thin onion rings that generally takes about an hour and a half to finish. Yaron was fidgety and kept joking aloud at how if he ate any more onion rings, he wouldn't be able to eat his dinner and that maybe they should tell them to wrap it up to take home. Luckily, Jennifer didn't take notice of these rantings and kept enjoying her onion rings.
Finally, the waiter came and asked if they were done with the onion rings. Breathing an internal sigh of relief, Yaron replied that they were (making sure that Jennifer actually was before answering). Lola regurlary has a fortune teller on hand to perform readings for the patrons. This psychic walks through the restaurant once or twice a night and asks the diners who are not currently eating if they would like a tarot card reading. Sure enough, a few moments later, Jennifer and Yaron were approached by the house psychic. She asked Jennifer - who was sitting closer to the aisle - if she would be interested in a reading. At first, Jennifer refused, but the psychic countered with "Are you sure? Tonight readings for ladies are free." Jennifer mulled this over and agreed to have a free reading.
The first part of the reading was uneventful. The psychic revealed things about Jennifer's future and present life. She liked her work and would go far. She was in love and the person she was with was a soul mate from at least 4 past lives. And so on. Then she gathered up her cards, handed them to Jennifer, and told her to shuffle them again. Jennifer thought that the cards felt a little weird, but luckily for Yaron, she didn't notice that the decks had been switched out. Jennifer handed the deck back to the psychic, who looked her in the eye and told her to pick a card from the deck and turn it over. This card that she selected would tell what her future would be.
With that, Jennifer reached down and drew a card. It read "Jennifer, Will you marry me?"
Yaron had written this message on every card in the deck so that it didn't matter what card she picked. Caught completely off guard, Jennifer didn't know what was going on. She looked up at Yaron who was suddenly holding a ring that had belonged to his mother. After an excruciating pause (it was probably only 1.5 seconds, but seemed much longer to Yaron) she said simply "Really?" Now that she didn't answer right away, Yaron started getting really nervous. He was able to get a "Yeah" out somehow. More pause from Jennifer. She looked at the card again.
Finally, the psychic, almost yelling, pleaded "So, what's your answer?" Snapped back to reality, Jennifer almost yelled back (more at the psychic than at Yaron) "Yes!"
Yaron gave Jennifer the ring. Satisfied with a job well done, the psychic left the table. The waiter returned and asked "Did she say yes?" Once he confirmed the good news and congratulated them, a large bouquet of flowers that Yaron had dropped off earlier in the day was placed on the table along with a bottle of champagne.
Other patrons and members of the Lola staff continued to come by throughout the rest of the evening to congratulate them, including the owner who half-joked, "We do a great reception here!"
What a wonderful way to start the rest of their lives...
